♥"I don't care what my teachers say, i'm gonna be a supermodel..." Clueless♥

Bonjour mes amies, apologies for the ridiculous lack of postage, i've been snowed under the mountains of work I have to do but i'm slowly getting through it so bear with me. As you all know I love Marc Jacobs. Like seriously worship the ground the man walks on. I removed him from the pedastool he was on and placed him on his own cloud after I found out he has banned celebrities from his front row at his shows after labelling them 'boring.' This was enough for him to make the transition from icon to legend in my opinion but then I found out from the fabulous blog The Redhead Fashionista that celebrities get paid to sit at front row and just like that, Marc Jacobs became God.

I had no idea this was the case. I just thought they got invited to sit front row but not paid. I knew celebrities got paid to go to events like clubs and openings, I remember being left completely opened mouthed after I heard Paris Hilton once say that she was getting paid $500,000 to show up at a club and party with her friends (all drinks and expenses paid) for one night but it naively never crossed my mind that celebrities like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Rihanna get paid for the privellege of showing up and sitting front row, rubbing shoulders with other stars, sipping champagne, watching an incredible show and lets be honest, the most important part, the goody bag.

I do understand that fashion is essentially a business, that photographs of the hottest star of the moment sitting front row will attract column inches which translates to publicity which translates to money in the bank for the design house. I also understand that if I was a celebrity getting paid thousands to enjoy the luxury of something that personally I would happily do for free (I would sit back row for absoultely nothing if it meant I got to sit in at a show) I would jump at the chance. But it's still quite shocking and distasteful in my opinion and has made me think twice about just how much goes on behind the scenes to create this image of luxury when actually its an utter sham and is just as much a business as Donald Trump's but gives out the allusion that it's the complete opposite.

The fact of the matter is that the running of the fashion industry is not dictated by the quirky designers who, when they receive financial backing,  essentially sign away a good amount of creative control over their company and effectively owe a lot of fat cats who only care about making money. The real fashion industry, the one well-hidden from outsiders, is actually dictated by people in stuffy black suits at board meetings which the "public face" of fashion criticizes and claims to be the very antithesis of. It's not.

"So", I hear you cry, "just how much do these celebrities get paid to maintain the well-executed lie?" Here comes the juicy bit, prepare to be as amazed as I was. A range of industry insiders for brands such as Rock and Republic, Chanel, Burberry and Victoria Beckham have leaked the pay packet of the stars, some of which have no interest or link with fashion, for their appearance at one of these shows. British readers just halve the values. Read on in horror and jealousy:

A-List
Rihanna ($100,000 or more)
Beyonce ($80,000-$100,000)
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen ($80,000 each)
Julianne Moore ($60,000)
Maggie Gyllanhal ($60,000)
Chloe Sevigny ($60,000 or more)
Jennifer Lopez (circa 2005: $80,000; circa 2010: $30,000)
Lindsay Lohan (circa 2006: $60,000; circa 2010; UNINVITED)
Colin Firth (pre-A Single Man: $5,000; post-A Single Man: $15,000)

B-List
Blake Lively ($50,000)
Leighton Meester ($40,000)
Hillary Duff ($40,000)
Other Gossip Girl cast members ($25,000 a piece)
Jared Leto ($25,000)
Cliven Owen ($10,000)
Kristen Bell (unpaid, but airfare, makeup and clothing are taken care of)

C-List
Kim Kardashian ($35,000-$50,000)
Amanda Bynes ($25,000-$30,000)
Eliza Dushku (unpaid, but airfare, makeup and clothing are taken care of)

D-List
Paris Hilton (free or UNINVITED)
Jersey Shore cast (UNINVITED)
America’s Next Top Model Winners (free)

Other designers such as Carolina Herrera are now following in the footsteps of Marc and refusing to pay celebrities for the privellege of publicity, but the majority of the well known houses still continue to do so. So darlings think twice next time you see a picture of a star studded front row at fashion week.  All that glitters is most certainly not gold.

So what do you think? Are you shocked to find out how much they get paid or were you clued up enough to know this all along? Do you think it matters or is it just good business sense?

I should also mention that a few days ago I was featured in an interview with the fantastic website I Heart Daily but because I was so insanely busy I wasn't able to post about it. It was such an honour and so much fun to do as I am such a fan of their site so I just want to say a huge thank you to them and if you want to read the full interview you can here. Oooh and i've just finished designing a brand new blog layout which has taken forever so I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts.

Hope you are all having an immense week.

Stay safe and chic mes chéries,
English Rose x

  6. Wow, that is crazy, I had heard this but did not realize the money that went into it! It should be a privalege to sit in the front row, not a paycheck. :)

  7. Yup. They loose crazy amounts on those shows! A recent post on the sartorialist said that due to loss, design houses might even start selling tickets to shows to the public. His analogy was that seeing a show would be like going to broadway. I'd be so excited for that! I'd love to sit in on a marc or chanel show!

  10. Your profile is hilarious. I wish I had a posh accent. I'm originally from Europe but my parents immigigrated to Canada long before I had the chance to develop any sort of 'prominence' with language, lol!

Love the blog, and thanks so much for checking into mine :)

  12. I knew that celebrities were getting paid and also got free clothes + goodie bags, but I had no idea the amounts were this high! This is insane! Especially considering they already earn a pretty decent salary. I always thought many of them would do it for free as a favor to the designer, i.e. Gwyneth & Kate Hudson are notoriously friends with Stella and she gets to them wear her designs all the time. Now I'm actually wondering if she pays them as well.

And good for Marc, taking a stand. I think this is the kind of thing that can easily get out of hand...

  13. This is so ridiculous. I always assumed it was the opposite, that celebrities PAID to be there! I assumed a front row seat at one of the hottest runway shoes was EXPENSIVE!! I'm horrified to find out it's the opposite.

I'm sad now. Whenever I saw my favorite celebrity at a runway show, I always got excited because it showed how interested and educated on fashion they were. Now I know it's just because they are getting paid to be there. What a shame.

I'm glad he's stopping this silly payment system. I hope more designers follow in his footsteps. I'd rather see someone with a genuine interest in fashion (famous or not) sit in the front row, rather than someone who is doing it for the money.

  17. i had heard about this, and it made me kinda mad.... if they cared about the designer that much they would just do it for free.... its a privilege to sit front row, not a job.

  19. Okay, I knew they got paid but I didn't know THAT MUCH! That is ridiculous! Oh the life of a celebrity! So hard. ;) I LOVE the MJ did that. He is an icon in my eyes {and I am absolutely obsessed with his clothes}. Also, I love that LiLo was uninvited. That should teach her to stop being so trampy! {probably won't though!}

But really, are you a journalist? Because you SHOULD BE!! You are such an amazing writer!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  20. Wow, I am shocked!!! I also understand it is a business and in a way its like the millions of brands who pay big bucks to use a celebrity in their super bowl ad and pay even more for the ad, but come on this is fashion. Its supposed to be art not a publicity stunt. Personally, I don't care what celebrities attended the show. I like looking at the designs, the backdrop, and the message that the designer was provoking. The people I am interested in seeing in the front row are the many editors who are their to critique because its their job and its what they love to do. I really enjoyed this post.

  24. unfortunately that's the truth and fashion industry. Those like Marc don't need that cause of status to have enough of attention or publicity. If I am designer I would never pay 30.000$ for kardashians- I would pay double to keep'em off the front row.:))
of course I'd love to exchange links. I put you on my blogroll

  25. Deception tends to be the name of the game within the fashion and entertainment industry. The poor deluded public are not only fed fake airbrushed images, but fake airbrushed lives. Charity in Hollywood is also a very big business. There is an organisation (whose name eludes me right now) which matches celebs with charites. There is big money in that alone, of which the charities don't actually fully benefit. We are made to believe that, not only are these A listers 'beautiful people' but they also have 'beautiful hearts'. The reality is, their 'charity work' is just one big mercenary, egomanical, pr excercise. I acknowledge that there are those who have a genuine heart felt interest as well. However, over all the hypocrisey is rife.
    Love this post,as always!

  28. It's absolutely ridiculous how much some of these celebrities get paid, isn't it? When it comes to sitting at a fashion show for just a few minutes, getting paid thousands and thousands of dollars is insane! Surely it's nice for these celebrities who are making massive loads of money from appearing at events and parties, but it just makes no sense to me.

It's never bothered me to see certain celebrities in the front row at shows. But those certain celebrities would be the fashionable ones that I actually like. Haha! (Like Emma Watson, for example.) But Paris and Nicky Hilton sitting front row? Wtf is that?!

  41. Well, I was as naive as you. Going to a show front row would be privilege enough. Well, seems like this is just the way it goes. They pay for the advertisment which comes with the stars.
I really like posts like this from you. You are really skilled and I think you will be really happy with your studies :)

  42. I was totally unaware of this! I kind of assumed that designers might invite celebs to see their shows and then they could accept or not...or they'd attend if they actually liked the designer.

I too am slightly pleased to see Paris Hilton as on the D-List, it's good to know the fashion world see it that way (:

(Also, to the poster suprised about Colin Firth-I would guess that it is probably due to the fact that Tom Ford directed A Single Man, so he has like fashion cred or something)

  45. this has been something that has bothered me for years!!!! i feel like i was being cheated into thinking that a celebrity loves a brand of clothes, but geez even if i didn't like a designer, but they paid me 80 grand heck yeah i would go to their show, boo!!! i hate being lied to.

  48. SO CRAZY. I read this a week or too ago on Fashionista and I found it to be quite interesting. I think that the fact that celebrities are paid to go to fashion shows kind of takes away from the mystique of the week. I mean, I think that one of the prime elements of fashion week is that it's a merge of people who all LOVE fashion. Rather than some frothy celebrity who's just going for money or publicity.

    Interesting post, as usual :).

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  49. I know that they get paid but I didn't know how much! I couldn't believe it! From a marketing point of view, I understand why fashion houses want the celebrities to sit in their show because it'll bring money which also means the business will continue to be strong. However, I think that with the popularity of bloggers and fashion becoming more accessible to public, designers will realize that they can make the same amount of money without the celebrities. Just my two cents.
