♥ I wonder if I could go back to Old Hollywood? ♥

Bonsoir mes amies, hope you all had an immense weekend. I couldn't let the last and most important awards ceremony pass without doing a post about it and bringing you all in to be my co-fashion police officers. As far as The Oscars go, this one was pretty safe and boring in my opinion both drama and fashion wise, but lets be honest 99% of us don't watch the Oscars for the movies and even though there weren't disasters on the Bjork scale (do any of us really need reminding of the swan dress?), it certainly wasn't without its horrors. Some truly beautiful and hideous outfits sashayed down the red carpet, far too many to post so i've had to narrow it down to my top 5 best and worst dressed, here goes nothing:

Best
Carey Mulligan in Prada - it may not be clear from the picture but the Oscar nominated actresses' dress is covered in tiny scissors, forks, knifes and spoons. Plus I love that she went against Anna Wintour's advice (very brave girl indeed) to wear a short dress. I love her hair and the shoes as well, and I'm not just biased because she's British. Promise.

Sandra Bullock in Vintage Marchesa - SO happy Sandy won Best Actress and she managed to be both a golden and silver girl. Stunning - old Hollywood glam at its very best.

Cameron Diaz in Armani Privé - what seemed to be the designer of choice for the night and responsible as you will see for the nights best and worst outfits; she may not have been nominated but Cameron certainly wasn't a shrinking violet but managed to get the "notice me" just right. It's a very thin line that I think she's thankfully on the right side of.

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab - okay i'll admit i've got a bit of a girl-crush on Rachel McAdams and the girl can do no wrong in my eyes but I think she looks beautiful and took a safe risk (if there is such a thing) and injected a little bit of much needed colour onto the carpet which was full of metalics and nudes.

Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham -  Um okay so I have a confession to make; I was really undecided whether to put this on the worst or best dressed list. I like the dress, I really do, but just not on Miley. I think its just a tad too old for her, she's what seventeen? Right dress, wrong person. On someone else it would have been gorgeous so it makes the best dressed list. Just.

Worst

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Couture - Yep, you all knew it was coming. I'm going to say something I never though would even enter my thoughts and will hopefully never think again; I don't care that it's Chanel, it's horrible. And what is WITH her hair!! I see where it's going but it doesn't quite get there and she just looks like a (pretty) gold curtain.

Nicole Richie in Reem Acra - Oh Nic, what were you thinking?! You are usually so fabulously stylish! Young girls allover the world look up to you! Unless Joel invented a time machine and this is actually Nicole in 70 years, this should not have been allowed to happen. But we'll forgive her because she has a good style record (shame about the criminal one.)

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries van Noten - I appreciate what she was trying to do, honest but she needs to take tips from Rachel McAdams, this is colour on the carpet gone wrong. Plus the fit is all wrong (what's with the bottom?!), it might even be nice for another ceremony (perhaps somewhere like The Cannes Film Festival?) but certainly not the Oscars. No siree.

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Couture by Ricardo Tisci - Darlings, you all know that no one on the planet appreciates couture more than me. But there is 'high fashion stylish' and 'everyday person stylish' and this falls into the former not the latter. Its not the dress which is gorgeous, its not the actress who is beautiful; its the occassion. High fashion does not always work for events. The dress is art and was made for the runway not the red carpet and that's where it should stay in my opinion.

And the absolute worst...

Jennifer Lopez in Armani Privé - no, no, no, no NO. OMG NO! Bubblewrap?! Is she SERIOUS?! I literally have nothing more to say about this. I just want to go up to it and pop the bubbles.

Honourable mention - those who almost made the post:

Best: Meryl Streep, Dame Helen Mirren, Mo'nique, Queen Latifah, Kate WInslet, Anna Kendrick
Worst: Deborah Ann Woll, Hilary Swank, Elisabetha Cannolis, Molly Ringwald, Charlize Theron, Vera Farmiga, Demi Moore

So what do you think darlings, do you agree with the categories I placed people in? Is there anyone I didn't feature who deserves an honourable mention?

Hope you all have a fabulous week.

Stay safe and chic mes chéries,
English Rose x

  19. Not a big fan of Miley, but couldn´t help to love her lovely dress.
As you said, right dress, wrong person...couldn´t describe it better myself!!
Thank you for such a great Oscars review!!!Besos!

  20. I would put Miley on the worst dressed list simply because of her slouch. For such a big time awards ceremony, there is a sense of decorum and manners that come along with it. Standing up straight shouldn't be so hard to pull off!
My favorite bests were Sandra Bullock, Carey Mulligan (most inventive frock too!), Kate Winslet, and Cameron Diaz too.

  21. Gorgeous dresses! Loved your review!
Hope you're having a sweet day!

    P.S. I didn't like Miley's dress.

  22. I have to admit that I kind of liked Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel... But I could totally see why many of us fashionistas wouldn't. The dress sure is weird, and curtainly;)

  23. Carey Mulligan is my definite favorite and I like Sandra Bullock's outfit too, even if I don't care for the actress. I will disagree with the Cameron Diaz outfit, because it looks so much like gowns I've seen in previous years already. Too safe and boring. It's for this reason I also didn't like the Demi dress (is Rachel Zoe styling them all in the same look for a reason?). I adored Helen Mirren's outfit as well.

I didn't like Miley's dress on her. I get that she's trying to be grown up, but if she wants to act like an adult, she should strike an adult pose and not keep her shoulders hunched like that. Bad posture is such a pet peeve of mine.

  25. Rachel McAdams looked stunning! I'm in love with that dress!

I completely agree about SJP. I didn't like the dress and the hair was just terrible!

  26. I loved Carey Mulligans look.

  27. I agree with the choices though I did like Miley's dress - it was just bad posture. Kristen Stewart was a big favorite in that Monique Lhuillier.

p.s. Carmen's dress was Oscar de la Renta.

  28. Miley Cyrus was my favorite of the evening; but, I have to admit, I liked Nicole Richie's gown. I thought it was gorgeous. Not something I would personally wear; but she looked amazing in it. :)

  29. It was a glam night for sure! Sandra's fab red pout and gold gown, Cameron's glitztastic gown and amazing hair, Carey's killer earrings...and my favorite...Demi's amazing nude ruffles!

  34. I totally agree with your best and worst choices. My absolute favorite was Sandra Bullock because she looked so amazingly CHIC and gorgeous and had that ol' Hollywood glamour about her.

And I was so disappointed with SJP, especially after that gorgeous princess dress she wore to last year's ceremony. Sigh.

    Fantastic post. xoxo

  37. For the most part I agree with your choices. I absolutely loved Carey Mulligan! However, I really loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's and Zoe Saldana's dresses. Even though they weren't traditional "Oscar" dresses I think it's great that they wore amazing fashion that was a little different but still fabulous.

  39. I totally agree with you about Miley - I was just saying this on another person's blog. It's a nice dress, she looks pretty, but it's just too mature for her.

  40. You know what? I agree with all your choices in best and worst list! I had the exact same thought when I saw Jennifer Lopez's dress too!! It was horrible! xxoxoxooxooxxo

  41. Sorry for the late reply. I've been absolutely buried under work and competitions the past few weeks (okay, months). I really do appreciate your comments though. (:

I'm glad you have Carey Mulligan as one of the best. Not only is her hair lovely, her dress design was simple yet creative and elegant. I do feel like Nicole Richie's dress was interesting even though it seems slightly too big for her, but that might be because I love anything that sparkles... (:

  42. i loved sandra bullock's outfit the best...i think she looked like an oscar lady herself!

  43. Totally agree with your Worst list!
And i also think that Miley Cyrus should have worn something else. She is so pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like how you judge the fashions without being catty! I actually liked Zoe Saldana's dress for just the reason that it was high fashion and if not to wear that at the Oscars then where else? However I see your point since the Oscars is a "classy affair" lol. I had no idea Carey's dress had such details, that just makes it that much cooler!
