♥ "We're better together,,," ♥ + UK Giveaway!

Bonjour mes amies, hope you are all immense - you'll be glad to know that i'm finally getting back on track (wahey!) but it may take a while to respond to all your wonderful comments.

Darlings, unlike people who like dirtbike riding and manicures, I'm very lucky because the two loves of my life, the two things that I am most passionate about, that I could not live without; music and fashion, also ♥ each other.

For as long as the crossover between music and fashion has existed, models have moonlighted (as if they needed the extra cash) as musicians in their spare time. Kate Moss, France's First Lady Carla Bruni and edgy Brit Agyness Deyn to name but a few have all got on stage and some have managed to be even better musicians then they are models, proving they are far more than just a pretty face. Whilst others such as Rachel Hunter in Fountains of Wayne's 'Stacey's Mom' or Tyra Banks' cameo in Michael Jackson's 'Black or White' if not providing vocals, have at the very least appeared in the odd music video or two.

And if models don't have the talent to be musicians themselves, they sure as hell can date one. Famous model/musician relationships, both doomed and successful, are as old as time itself showing just how much the two worlds collide. Kate Moss is undoubtedly the world's most photogenic groupie with a string of musically gifted boyfriends; The Libertines and Babyshambles' Pete Doherty and now Jamie Hince from The Kills anyone? But 'Cocaine Kate' isn't the only one who likes her boys to have rhythm; Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger, Bianca and Mick Jagger (the man likes his models) , Sophie Dahl and Jamie Cullum, Alexa Chung and Alex Turner, Seal and Heidi Klum, Rachel Hunter and Rod Stewart (another serial modeliser), Yasmin and Simon Lebon, Iman and David Bowie, the list, is quite literally endless.

Models it would appear, inspire musicians and what musician can't resist a muse? The opposite is also true with musicians inspiring the fashion world and appearing in ad campaigns and runway shows; like Madonna for Jean Paul Gaultier, Lily Allen for Chanel or Rihanna for Dsquared2, the coin flips both ways, proving fashion and music are symbiotic; they need each other to survive and flourish.

And of course, the ultimate connection; what good fashion show would be complete without the ultimate playlist? The soundtrack is amoungst the most important part of any fashion show and can literally make or break the whole thing. The music should compliment and promote the concept and atmosphere of the collection without overshadowing it, it's a tough job but someone's got to do it. Which is where my fabulous UK giveaway comes in:

UK GIVEAWAY: Some of you may also be readers of the fabulous A Daisy Chain Dream blog and know that she is currently staging a music giveaway as part of a music phone trial we are both currently doing. Well darlings, I've been given the same wonderful opportunity by Nokia to share the love with my readers and strongly I believe in sharing all good things that come your way wherever you can. It gives me more happiness than you can imagine to be able to offer 5 of my superchic, music-loving UK bloggers, 10 free tracks of their choice to download from NokiaMusic which is basically like Itunes. Sound good?

If you live in the UK all you have to do is comment on this post and let me know which one song you would definitely include in your fantasy catwalk show and why. For example 'Lady Gaga's 'Fashion' because the lyrics are too perfect for words'. I'll run the giveaway until 6pm on Wednesday so get thinking and entering!

Even if you aren't eligible to enter the compettiton, i'd love it if you could still answer the question as I'd love to know your fantasy fashion show soundtrack and maybe get some ideas for new music to listen to!

Have an immense week,

Stay safe and chic mes chéries,
English Rose x

  10. I love this post and what a great giveaway, I shall indeed be entering! I'd have to say I'd use the track Satin Chic by Goldfrapp. It's got a great beat and while it's not a song about fashion the lyrics, "Dressed up in lizard green,Celluloid seventeen, Lip gloss bold as blood, You got 'em linin' up" are pretty damn good lyrics and I guess you can attribute them to the fashion world :P I do just love that song though, check it out on Youtube and you'll see what I mean, very London Fashion Week methinks. xxx

  11. Hello there English Rose! I was thinking about your question and answers came right away - i would pick 3 songs by Yelle, one of my favourite french artists."A CAUSE DES GARCONS", "CE JEU" and "LES FEMMES". Check it out!

    Greetings from Poland, Veronica.

  12. I agree, fashion and music belong together! Each industry is full of the same sparklingly creative and quirky individuals, so it's natural for them to gravitate together. Hmm my fashion show soundtrack would have to include Lady Gaga of course since she is music incarnation of haute couture and avante garde right now, and maybe some old school Garbage like the song Crush just for its pounding bass and slinky vocals.

Tell me your Holy Grail mascara and you could win a must-have beauty prize!! http://highmaintenancewoman.blogspot.com/2010/03/holy-grail-mascaras-giveaway.html

  14. If I was to hold a fashion show, I would HAVE to include 'Seventeen' By Marina and the Diamonds.
    Here it is on youtube.com - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYAqUmEVwBQ

    My reasons are:
    One, because I love her.
Two, because it has an amazing beginning that would be perfect to walk to.
Three, when Marina begins singing, its pretty contrasting to the rest of it due to the low voice which makes it exciting.
Finally, four...its called 'seventeen' - representing youth, and what life used to be like or possibly how life can be if you keep your child like mentalities which makes things fun :)

These are my reasons! Hope they are good enough :)

  20. I think Carla Bruni is awesome. I adore her modeling work from the 90s (would kill for her cheekbones) and her music has something that really gets me. Classic charm.

  28. And the most supermodely music video (perhaps) ever? Freedom! By George Michael.

Although I can't enter the giveaway, some music that I would love to have at a fashion show would be:
Sugar by The Orion Experience (because it has a fantastic amount of energy, I would choose it for an edgy, bright and colourful collection).
Owl Waltz by Seabear (because it's really cute, I would choose it for a soft, romantic, girly collection).

  31. Hahahahaha cracking up at "modelester"! Genius!! I adore Lilly Allen, I just wish she were bigger over here in the US.

  32. Oh my goodness, this is a tough one. Can I have multiple songs? I've always loved "Orbit of Me" by Delerium, which is for a more light hearted, but still serious show. For the darker show, I would pick Cocteau's Twins "Persephone" which is just incredibly thrilling to listen to.

  38. Hello English Rose, Im sorry I have not commented on your blog lately I have missed it. Anyway I enjoyed reading this poSt because I totally agree with you. Fashion and music are my interests too and the way they go together is just perfect. I think a lot of the reason is because they both reflect our mood a lot of the time and have the ability to demonstrate how we feel. It's nice to have some outlets to do that and fashion and music can provide so much happiness.

  39. I've got a future ahead of me, wether I'm a lawyer or my dream of becoming a fashion designer follows through, I can still get sidetracked. Somethings may de-rail your life, ruining it. So I'll say right now, do you want to feel miserable and rejected your whole life for that one hit on a drug, that one moment of pleasure, or do you want to feel known and needed by just saying no. So supporting all the fellow girls out there with bright futures (which is everyone) I want to ask you my fellow viewers and bloggers to spread the word, Say No! and save your life, Literally!!!!
    Please pass this on

  40. I think all creative arts are intertwined in a way because they aren't one-dimensional. I believe movies have a huge influence on fashion (and vice versa) as well... in fact, I'm blaming leggings on the whole Flashdance scene ;-). Art (from Pollock to Mondrian to Botticelli) has made huge appearances as well. Don't forget that aside from the models and modelizers, fashion has basically relied on music for their hottest trends, whether it was 80s Madonna, grunge, rock glam or country.

P.S. Thanks for your last comment. How modest of Karl to say he doesn't speak Italian fluently ;-) The only reason I thought so was because I caught an interview with him once, which conducted only in Italian and he answered everything as if it were his mother tongue (I'm guessing he has to because of Fendi). But maybe he doesn't feel as comfortable speaking that as he does the other 3 languages. And yes, I do speak German, French and English... as well as another 3 languages.

  41. Yes, indeed fashion is always in relation to music (Very nice about the dating models and musicians). I really like different rock or punk elements, in particular, in fashion.

  42. I so agree ... there is really a continuing love affair between fashion and music!

  49. Hmmm. Interesting post! I've never really considered the connection between models and music -- like, the roles that models play in music. But it makes sense. Fashion and music are so intertwined in their art form.
