♥ "They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no..." ♥

Bonjour mes amies, hope you are all having an immense week. I told you all last week that I was going to use the weekend to make the switch from Autumn/Winter to Spring/Summer wardrobe. And I did. To describe the experience as an ordeal would be nothing short of an understatement. It was sartorial hell. Making the switch taught me some very valuable lessons:

1) I have a lot of incredibly beautiful clothes
2) I have way too many incredibly beautiful clothes
3) No really, I have way too many incredibly beautiful clothes
4) I have more clothes than any teenager should, no matter how much they love fashion
5) I have more clothes than any human should, no matter how much they love fashion
6) Shopping on a budget (read teenager) apparently makes no difference to how many beautiful clothes you have
7) It's quite possible that I could clothe an entire naked nation (does one exist?) with my wardrobe
8) I could probably wear one outfit in my wardrobe every day for the rest of my life adolescence without wearing the same outfit twice
9) There really is such a thing as too much of a good thing

Okay I might be being just a tad dramatic and exaggerating ever so slightly (you know me darlings), my wardrobe may still have space but I do have a hell of a lot of clothes, way more than any of my friends who are literally a gazillion times richer (but admittedly way less fashion-obsessed) than I am. I'll never forget the shock I felt going round to one of my good friends houses whose parents are multi-millionaires and seeing about 25 items of (designer) clothing in her entire wardrobe. You'd need to put a '1' infront of that figure for my own closet. And none of it is designer.

Making the switch this weekend was a lesson and a half. To be perfectly honest darlings, I was shocked, stressed and more than a little ashamed. Don't get me wrong, i'm not addicted or anything (before you stage an intervention and call up shopaholics annonymous on my behalf). Neither am I mocking real shopping addiction which is a very real, serious issue for a lot of people.

I'm just like a fashion magpie. My purchases are spread out and I only get something that is truly magnificent. It's just that because I appreciate and adore the beauty in fashion and clothes when I see spectacular clothes that I know would suit my shape and style perfectly I want them. The mass of clothes is the culmination of half a decade, not one weekend, of purchases. My problem is not that my closet is full of stuff I don't actually want or would never wear, it's full of more beautful stuff than I could possibly wear at the moment.

Hopefully one day my reality will match the awesomeness of my wardrobe but at seventeen I don't really have much use for Red-Carpet worthy dresses. Of which I have about 20 if you were wondering. So although I gave the odd thing that didn't fit or that I no longer liked to charity, I want to keep mostly everything in my wardrobe as I love them all and will absolutely wear them all. I just need to wait a bit for life to play catch up. So I'm hitting pause.

I can't quite believe i'm writing this but darlings, from today, i'm placing myself on a self-imposed, 2 month shopping ban. Little steps are the most successful so I'll start with two months and see how it goes. Obviously I will still buy books, magazines, dvd's etc and accessories are still okay (one can never have too many over-sized rings) but I'm going to make the most of what I have right now and love the clothes i've already got. I hope it will help me put not just my wardrobe but my life into perspective. I'm going to track my progress on the blog and you have to help me if I feel I might relapse okay? I can do this, right guys?

...right guys?

....

..

.

Do you think i'll last the two months darlings? Have any of you been on a self-imposed shopping ban? More importantly were you successful and did it help?

Wish me luck!

Stay safe and chic mes chéries,
English Rose x

  2. Good luck! I have been on a self imposed shopping ban before and it was because I needed to save up for great art supplies for my current semester. It has been a success so far and it has helped me learn to be more creative with what I own. I believe you can do it, English Rose :)

  3. good luck with the shopping ban, my dear! so, if other people buy you clothes is that still allowed? i mean, if there is something you see and just have to have then i suppose you could just hint to your parents and friends, hehe :)

  6. I totally agree. I most likely don't have as much clothes as you, but mayby i don't really need to shop and look at the topshop website every weekend because i have clothes that are made to mix and match, and recently i've actually come out with a few new outfits while actually looking through my wardrobe sufficiently. Only on friday did i go somewhere looking for print out tights, and then realise i had a pair at home.

  7. I think if you have more clothes than you can wear (no matter how gorgeous they are), a shopping ban is a great idea. I suffered from the same problem... I just couldn't stop collecting and even though all pieces had a purpose (few of them were throwaway fashion items), there's no point to keep accumulating stuff that doesn't get enough wear. If I were you, I'd probably also make a point of wearint the stuff you rarely get to wear, even if it's more formal? Perhaps find a way to 'casualise' it? (ok, it may be tricky with a gown...).

I've put myself on shopping bans and it's definitely helped. Especially as I'm the kind of person who rarely throws or gives away clothes (I still fit in stuff I wore as a teenager).

P.S. I do believe there are nations with naked people... don't many tribes just wear leaves and nothing much else? But I'm not sure they'd need silk dresses or jeans ;-)

  8. I've been doing the same thing for the last four months, and I never thought I could do it, but I did! I'm sure you can do it for two months, you jut really gotta be committed because I'll admit; its hard! I felt the same way as you did with your closet, i have clothes that suit my shape and body and I think are fabulous, but they just don't suit my lifestyle. I'm going to be selling some *hopefully* and just giving the profits to my favorite charity, Animal Aid. It's a cathartic experience.

  11. You can definitely do it. I've been on a semi ban for a long time and think it's a good thing. I'm a natural pack rat so it's hard for me to get rid of stuff (yes still have some things from h.s which was a while ago!)
But I find myself paring down every time I look at my clothing. I want it to be unique, timeless, or just plain wearable. Your tastes will evolve and you'll find yourself shopping and giving away from your closet.

  17. Noooo, don't do a shopping ban! New stock comes in soon! Haha, if you must though, I wish you the best of luck - I don't think I could do it. I've been on a semi shopping ban... I still shop and buy but everything gets shipped to my university address, so my parents will never figure out where my student loan is disappearing off to... shhh. x

  22. You are going to do it; and we're all going to make sure that you succeed with your two-month shopping ban.

And idea...select something that you desperately want to buy. Print out pictures of that one item and keep them with you and hang them everywhere. Whenever you feel the urge to splurge look at that picture...all of the money you save during your two-month shopping ban will be used to buy that fabulous item!! :)

  23. I wish you all the best of luck with your shopping ban! I could not do it though myself because shopping is sort of my therapeutic release along with writing and reading. I like to look very well dressed and have an extremely difficult time resisting a shoe sale especially. I do think you will be successful though!

  27. I know what you mean about having too many clothes! I definitely have the same problem, for the same reason! I love everything I have and can't bare to let it go! The problem has gotten more noticeable since I started university because now I have to move everything back and forth at the beginning and end of school. It's just a big headache.

GOod luck on your self-imposed ban! I'm sure you'll be successful if you make yourself track your progress here. If the ban seems to get too hard, maybe you should try moving to the 1 in, 1 out rule. If you find something that you just have to buy figure out what you can get rid of in your closet to make room for the new item. Good luck!

  28. You will be wonderful! No worries, 2 months? No problem. Just read this post every time you are tempted.
I'd love to see you do something of a "journey" on reusing things you already own. I love blogging and reading blogs, but I hate how it can sometimes be SO materialistic. I think documenting your 2 months will be healthy for us all. I'm excited to see how it goes!

  30. I totally went on a shopping ban in January when I realized the amount of winter clothes I have was getting out of hand, and the end of winter was no time to be buying more peices. One month went by, and I successfully made it with out buying one piece of fashion (not even undies or hair pins!!). As soon as February rolled along my ban lifted. Horrible thing is that spring clothes rolled out at that time too, and I went on a ridiculous shopping binge. Now I must go through my clothes and see which ones I can suck up parting with (as I am much like you have have a huge accumulation of beautiful things I never wear). I guess this ban resulted in some what of a "fashion bulimia" for me, I hope you have better luck.

  31. haha! oh this made me giggle :)
you sound so much like me!

  32. Well it wasn't self-imposed as such, my Mum literally forced me and said I couldn't buy any clothes whatsoever for the time you are banning yourself! I nearly died! And to make it worse I kept on looking at fashion blogs and their new buys and got overly not to mention extremley jealous, never ever again I tell you! But you do get the most joyous feeling you could ever have along with it being completely insane. There's no doubt about it you will suffer but if you can halt your fashion instinct for that long its definitely worth it!

  35. I understand you.
Changing seasons for wardrobes are such pain in the neck! There are so many things you have but you just forget them as time passes.
    Speaking about wasteful!

    ReplyDelete
  36. You can do it!! The best part is that if you really stick with it, the effects will last longer than the ban. Since imposing shopping bans and "rules to buy" on myself, I've found myself shopping less and being more critical about what I buy. I'm even doing a purge at the end of the month by selling/donating a bunch of old stuff! Before you get rid of everything though, you might want to enter my contest hehehe...

  47. ooh, two months?! now that's a long time! good luck sweetie, i hope you can do it :) you have such a gorgeous blog, i'm most definitely following! unfortunately, my mum thinks i've got too many clothes as well (probably nowhere as near close to how many you have, though!) and she's limiting how often i go shopping :( oh well, have a fabulous weekend ♥

  48. Yes you can do the shopping ban. I believe in you. I went on a shopping ban at the beginning of the year which lasted about 6-8 weeks. Now I am not on one but I'm making a conscious effort to buy less which also works. I am amazed by the amount of money I saved this year because of this and I think the longer I did the shopping ban, the more motivated I was to continue. Right now i have a rule that if I buy something then I must permanently remove four things from my wardrobe and this makes me think twice about buying sometimes. I really enjoyed reading this post and I agree with you about shopping on a budget which brings the potential for multiple items of beautiful clothing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have tried to go on shopping bans... They have never quite worked. I have slowed down my shopping quite a bit in recent months but I just can't get it to a standstill. It should be noted, though - I have a lot of clothes, but probably not equal to you. Anyways, my main problem is accumulating t-shirts. I love them. I can't get enough of them.
